The ArboNET figures were current as of 21 July 2026, and the critical detail is what had not happened yet: peak transmission months, August and September, had not begun. Reporting on the CDC data by Medical Daily frames 2026 as the earliest and most severe opening since 2004 — a year that finished with more than 2,500 cases and over 100 deaths nationwide. That combination, a five-fold early-season anomaly with the peak still ahead of it, is what makes this mosquito season different from a normal bad year. The American Medical Association separately reported that West Nile deaths rose 32% in 2025. The geography is where reader assumptions break. According to the CDC data, Colorado led all states with 285 cases, followed by Illinois with 149 and Texas with 127; VDCI's extract places Minnesota (122) and California (112) in the top five as well. Florida is not the story. On the 2025 counts, the heaviest West Nile burden in the United States sits in the Mountain West and the Upper Midwest as much as anywhere in the South — which means the addressable geography for household mosquito protection is effectively the entire continent, not a Gulf Coast strip.

The places adding the most transmissible days are not the ones that already had long seasons; they are temperate cities where mosquito season was historically short enough to ignore. Dusk-only precautions do not match a daytime biter that breeds in the tire, bucket or blocked gutter in your own yard.
Canada Is Not the Mosquito-Free Exception It Is Assumed To Be
Canadian buyers and households are routinely told mosquito-borne disease is an American problem. The Public Health Agency of Canada's own surveillance says otherwise. In its annual mosquito-borne disease report, updated 21 March 2026, PHAC recorded 177 domestically acquired West Nile cases in 2024 plus 13 travel-associated cases, against a 2019–2023 annual average of 82 — a range running from 44 in 2019 to 167 in 2020. That is more than double the five-year average. The clinical breakdown was 106 neurological cases (60%), 41 non-neurological (23%), 17 unspecified (10%) and 13 asymptomatic (7%), with 1 death. Geographically the burden is concentrated where Canada's population and retail density already are: Ontario reported 81 cases (46%, or 0.74 per 100,000) and Quebec 77 (44%, 0.67 per 100,000), together 90% of the national total, with Manitoba at 12, Saskatchewan at 5 and British Columbia at 2. PHAC also notes that 65% of cases occurred in people over 60 — an older demographic for whom ambient, area-based protection is often more practical than repeated skin application. The Canadian season now starts in high summer and moves fast: in 2025, Toronto's first positive mosquito batches were confirmed on 18 July, and Canada's first human case of the year followed on 31 July.
